“Congratulation to the County Government of Tana-River for the brilliant representation and display at the just concluded Mombasa International Show. A special shout-out to the Heads of Agriculture and Irrigation departments for their steady and exceptional work in showcasing Tana River's agricultural potential on a grand stage. Despite the challenges the county has faced for a very long time like marginalization, vulnerability due to climate change hazards ranging from droughts, floods, sea water intrusion, pests and diseases (crop and livestock) as well as occasional human epidemics, the county managed to participate in the 2024 Mombasa International Show in style.  The display was well staged and that depicts the preparedness of the County Government towards the implementation of climate change mitigation, adaptation and resilience action programs. The county Government of Tana-river is among the 45 counties in the country which have complied with Financing Locally Led Climate A

Mashinani Watch Organization urge to parents on diminishing jobs in the market as former President Daniel Moi Pressman warns journalists on investments.

Mashinani Watch Organization Executive Director Moffat Mutero has advised parents to guide their children choose competitive and marketable courses or else suffer  joblessness. Speaking during a round table meeting which was convened by Media Council of Kenya and the former president Moi pressman Lee Njiru in Mombasa, Mutero said traditional media related jobs are diminishing due to threats caused by citizen journalism and therefore there was need to relook at the marketability of various courses before enrolling. "The citizen journalism has really posed a big threat to traditional journalism making it less marketable. The media have to change the way they operate and work, including the newsroom. The reporters, the journalists, have to multitask, not only writing news for the print media but also for the online media. They also need to hold on to various skills and be technology-savvy, otherwise they will be outdated.” said Mutero. On his part, Lee Njiru who served former p

Potential of the most despised tree in Coast Region.

"I take this opportunity to urge residents residing along the coastline to safeguard mangrove trees to control the emitted carbon dioxide by industries. Although the emission of carbon gas has become a challenge in Kenya and globally, conservation of mangrove trees can be of great importance to restrain the vice. Mangrove tree cannot be compared with any other tree species in the terrestrial since it has the capacity to absorb carbon dioxide more times than any other tree and I insist that uncontrolled industrial pollution is a great question in climate change regulation worldwide. Deforestation of mangrove plantation along the sea is a major challenge in fighting excess carbon emitted in the air by various industries and the destruction has also in one way contributed to climate change. People just see mangrove as an ordinary tree like any other but in real science the tree is the best in fighting global warming caused by excess carbon emission. It can sequester carbon gas fi

Coast drug addicts decry shortage of rehabs and counselling centers

Hundreds of recovering drugs addicts in Mombasa County have decried lack of easy access to rehabilitation services to support them. Walid Mbarak from Mtwapa in Kilifi County said raising fare to travel to Freetown Centre to collect methadone dose was a major hurdle. “We are asking for support from government to enable us access the methadone and counselling services. Because we are jobless, sometimes we fail to raise fare to get to this centre,” said Mr Mbarak, adding that the society has also stigmatised them. He urged the Government to also include them in menial jobs programme for youths as idleness makes most of them to relapse. Mashinani Watch Organisation Executive Diretor Moffat Mutero said the drug menace in Coast Region is now alarming and there is need for government to also focus on rehabilitation programmes as it continues to fight drug trafficking across the country. "The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Control Act No 4 of 1994 Section 52 to 58 speaks about

Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) are now appealing to the Mombasa county Government to expedite the formulation of a Climate Act and Policy for Mombasa in order to benefit from the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) Program. In March, the national government in collaboration with development partners secured Sh39.3 billion to roll out a locally-led climate action financing programme. The program is funded by the World Bank and the governments of Germany, Sweden, Denmark and Netherlands. The goal is to implement locally led climate resilience actions and to strengthen National and County governments’ capacity to manage climate risks. It is implemented in 45 counties except Mombasa and Nairobi. Mombasa-based CSOs Sunday converged for a roundtable community engagement and strengthening of Locally Led Climate Actions in Mikindani, Jomvu Sub-County.
