Mashinani Watch Organization urge to parents on diminishing jobs in the market as former President Daniel Moi Pressman warns journalists on investments.
Mashinani Watch Organization Executive Director Moffat Mutero
has advised parents to guide their children choose competitive and marketable
courses or else suffer joblessness.
Speaking during a round table meeting which was convened by
Media Council of Kenya and the former president Moi pressman Lee Njiru in
Mombasa, Mutero said traditional media related jobs are diminishing due to
threats caused by citizen journalism and therefore there was need to relook at
the marketability of various courses before enrolling.
"The citizen journalism has really posed a big threat to
traditional journalism making it less marketable. The media have to change the
way they operate and work, including the newsroom. The reporters, the
journalists, have to multitask, not only writing news for the print media but
also for the online media. They also need to hold on to various skills and be
technology-savvy, otherwise they will be outdated.” said Mutero.
On his part, Lee Njiru who served former presidents Jomo
Kenyatta and Daniel Moi for over three decades advised journalists to invest in
various projects to avoid regrets later. He said most media practitioners are
perishing in poverty due to lack of investments and this made many of them to
result into depression. He also told them to maintain high level of discipline,
hard work and also embrace media ethics at all times.
"Am speaking to you as a father, colleague and a
grandfather, if you are not careful you will regret later after retirement.
Some of you when you work on a radio, Tv or a newspaper you grow horns and you
eventually forget that, the media houses you work for belongs to the owner not
you." added Njiru.
